Happy Wednesday

Welcome to another Wednesday and another WIPpet! Today you're getting another snippet from Nephil's Destiny, which is the final book in my The Chosen Chronicles Series. In this excerpt, it is about ten years after the scene from last week, so Amaya and Deacon are adults now.
For those of you new to WIPpets, it is a snippet of your Work In Progress. The only rule is that it has to be associated with the date somehow. For example, today is 8-13-2014. You are getting 20 lines for the first two digits of the year. If you want to join us for a WIPpet, go here and post your link. Make sure to read everyone else's contributions and don't forget to comment on as many as you can. The more comments you leave, the more you'll get in return! Enjoy!

Amaya's eyes drifted shut in anticipation of the kiss. Deacon released her hand and slid his down to her hip and around her waist, drawing her closer to himself. Her lips tingled as she waited anxiously for his to make contact and her heart pounded so loudly that she was afraid he could hear it. Just before he made contact with her, someone clearing their throat from behind them made them both freeze.
"Sorry to interrupt." Dev stuffed his hands in his pockets and looked sheepish.
Deacon didn't release Amaya. He turned his head and looked over his shoulder. "Then don't."
Dev chuckled. "Sorry, dude. Zeke sent me to get Amaya. You'll have time to do whatever you were going to do after you leave. I'm not going to be the one to piss off the lady who just gave birth."
Deacon glared at his friend. "I want to do it now, not later. Go away."
Amaya laughed and ducked under Deacon's arm. "Pack some canned food for us, would ya?"
Dev waited to speak until Amaya had disappeared up the stairs. "Want to talk about that?"
"It's none of your business."
"No, it's not. Want to talk about it anyway?"
Deacon opened the pantry and starting yanking out cans at random. "I was going to kiss her. You interrupted. End of story."
"We both know that's not what I meant. Dude, you and Amaya? When did that start?"
"Eight years ago."
Dev choked on a gulp of water. "Eight years ago and I'm just hearing about it now? Jesus fucking Christ, why in the hell haven't you said anything?"

  1. Haha - what a great scene! I'm loving Deacon's characterization. He's so matter of fact about being with Amaya for eight years. Looking forward to reading more from you!

  2. Lot's interpersonal interaction going on here, and lots of questions raised! Makes me curious what this is all about. :)

  3. Well, they haven't been together for eight years. He's referring to that being when things started, but they weren't able to pursue a relationship because of Mama Lilith. :-)

  4. Ooh, the plot thickens! I like how Deacon doesn't mince words when telling Dev why he's annoyed. Of course, now I want to know what all has led up to this!

  5. I see I'm not the only one with a kissing - or almost kissing - scene this week. I love the interplay between the three characters, and I really want to know what all happened in those eight years, as well as what precipitated the abortive kiss in this scene. I love the buildup, the interruption - even the randomness with which Deacon grabs at the food while his mind is clearly still on what he wants to be doing with Amaya..

  9. I love the ending of this. Poor Deacon. Dev couldn't have given them just another few minutes?!!? Come on, be a pal! ;)

  10. The immediacy of the dialogue really pulls the reader in at the end of this scene. The kiss interrupted was handled nicely, but . . . when Deacon says he wants to "do it now," it kind of pulled me out of the scene. I know he's responding to Dev's wording, "do whatever you were going to do," but Deacon is referring to a kiss, right? The back story reads smoothly, and I loved the dialogue between the three.

    1. Yes, he's referring to a kiss. There's a lot of history between these two, and I likely should have included the next couple lines which explains that the "eight years" of history includes Amaya kissing him twice and just as Deacon was making his move, Dev interrupted.
