WIPpet Wednesday

So I got a GREAT response from people last week, and a lot of comments. I'm thrilled that everyone liked what I wrote!

For those of you who aren't familiar with what a WIPpet it, it stands for Work in Progress Wednesday. The one day a week where you post an excerpt from a current work in progress. The only rule is that the amount that you post has to have something to do with the date. Today is 10-09-2013, so I am going to post thirteen(short) paragraphs from Book Three in my series. Since everyone loved Braxton in the last WIPpet, I'll feature him again here.

Oh, and once you finish reading mine, head over to this site and read everyone else's or post your own.

“She’s not in that box, Brax. She doesn’t know if you come to visit or not. That’s for you, not for her.”
Braxton turned the key to start the engine and put the car in gear. “Cold comfort.”
“Is still comfort.” Alaria pulled out her own phone and typed out a text message on the digital keyboard. “You could have called. I’d have gone with you. Gage would have gone with you.”
“I wanted to go alone.” He stared stonily at the road in front of him. “It’s getting harder and harder to hold on to her, and the more she slips away, the more I want to dig in my fingers and hold tighter.”
Her eyes conveying her sympathy, Alaria reached out and laid her hand on his knee. “You’re healing. That’s a good thing.”
He shook his head swiftly. “She deserves to have someone mourn her for the rest of their life. She deserves more than a year.”
“Her death was not a death sentence for you both, Brax.” Her voice was quiet, but her words were firm. She patted his knee and withdrew her hand. “You’ll realize that eventually.”
“Don’t lecture me about clinging to the past. You’re the one still sleeping with it.”
Alaria's eyes flashed with hurt and anger. “Don’t you dare judge me. You have no idea what I’m going through or how hard this is for me. I’m handling it the best way I know how.”
Braxton held up his hand, palm out. “I’m not trying to pick a fight.” He waved his hand when she started to speak. “I know it came off that way.” He squeezed her fingers. “Damn but we’re a pair.”
The air in the car contracted as it filled with what hadn’t been said. Alaria leaned her head against the window and closed her eyes. “We’ll figure it out sooner or later.”
Braxton squeezed her hand one last time and withdrew his own. “I know. What I don’t know is if that’ll make things better or worse.”
      “Me either.”

Let me know in the comments what you think!

Dang! This is a great excerpt, so full of emotion. Although Alaria seems a bit cold in contrast to a fiery Braxton.

  2. Aww... There's so much hurt and struggle in this scene. It's very good. =0)

  3. Wow... the intensity of the two of these. Braxton with his forthright fire, and Alaria with what feels like a smouldering burn...

    Nice piece, Sirena.

  4. Thank you all! I love these two characters, and watching their relationship evolve over four books has been an incredible privilege. I'll be terribly sad to wrap it up with this book and move on to the next phase in my series.
